At the "Master Class Plus" bestselling author Barbara Kyle shares tips and techniques to help you create the kind of compelling narrative publishers want.

Your story's opening is crucial — to interest an agent or publisher it must "hook" the reader immediately. In Saturday's all-day workshop Barbara covers five essential aspects of craft used by successful authors:

  1. Hooks: Your Story's First Five Pages
  2. The Inciting Incident: Motivating Your Protagonist
  3. Conflict and Reversals: Essentials of Story Structure
  4. Deep Character: Creating the Empathetic Protagonist
  5. Dialogue: Dynamic Uses and Cardinal Sins

In Sunday's half-day workshop Barbara focuses on Getting Published:

  • How to query publishers
  • The truth about agents
  • The exciting new world of self-publishing with e-books
  • Q & A session on "the Biz." Come with questions for Barbara!

You'll leave Barbara Kyle's "Master Class Plus" empowered to shape your story into a captivating, memorable read.

New York Comes to Niagara: A Writers Conference

Here’s a great discount offer from the organizers of "New York Comes to Niagara."

This writers conference runs October 27-30, 2011 in Niagara Falls. I’ll be giving a workshop, and so will Terry Fallis (Stephen Leacock Medal winner), plus several editors from top publishing houses.

The conference is offering a generous discount to any writer who has previously attended one of my workshops or Master Classes, or for whom I have done a manuscript evaluation. The discount is $100, so instead of $495 for the conference the cost would be $395.

From the conference website: “New York Comes to Niagara is based on the successful series of Algonkian events and novel workshops. This first ever Canadian event is designed to introduce promising and talented writers to the professionals who can help them achieve their goal of becoming published.”

To claim your $100 discount, call Gail Mercer-MacKay at 905.510.3627 and tell her which of my past workshops you’ve attended, or that I’ve given you a manuscript evaluation.

I hope to see you in Niagara Falls!
